The Shepherd Group Brass Band
The Senior Band is one of the top brass bands in the North of England performs in prestigious concerts and competitions all over Yorkshire. During 2012 the band won the North of England Area contest (1st Section) and also the Leicester Open Contest (1st Section) and got promoted to the Championship Section. Since then the band has gone from strength to strength and has built a strong reputation as one of the best bands in the area.
Since the band’s formation in 1903 we have undergone a few name changes but have always been synonymous with quality brass band playing in the York area. We’re now proud of our association with the Shepherd Group and are delighted to rehearse in their state-of-the-art facilities on the company’s Portakabin site in York.
The Senior Band is ably supported by the Concert Band and Youth Band, and we believe we are one of the most successful banding organisations in the area when it comes to discovering and nurturing new playing talent. We are particularly proud of our record in this area, and are fortunate to have talented and enthusiastic members to train the new players. This means that when a new player joins the organisation they have a clear path of progression and structure.
Our members come from all walks of life – students, tradespeople, the self-employed, teachers and academics – and what’s more we are an extremely friendly and sociable band.
The Senior Band rehearses on Tuesday and Fridays from 8:00pm – 10:00pm on the Portakabin site in Huntington, York.

The Musical Director: Richard Wilton
Richard started learning to play the tuba at the tender age of 8 under the tutelage of cornet virtuoso Graham Walker and began his banding career as a member of the Hambleton Brass Band in 1983. After 10 happy years with the band, Richard inevitably moved into the realms of top banding with the world famous Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band as their principal tuba player. During his time there the band had many successes culminating in becoming Yorkshire Area Champions in 1999.
After a short spell with the Sellers International Band under the directorship of cornet legend Phillip McCann, Richard fulfilled his childhood ambition of joining the bass section of the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band, travelling extensively around Australasia, the United States and Europe. During his time with the band, Richard enjoyed many successes including back to back area championships, an unprecedented five in a row Brass in Concert titles and, the highlight surely, becoming National Champion Band of Great Britain in 2006.
Richard returned to his banding roots at South Milford Brass (formerly Hambleton Brass) in 2005, but this time as Musical Director. After a very happy and successful period with the band, culminating in becoming North of England Champions in 2008 and 2009 Richard decided it was time to move on. Richard has now been with Shepherds for six years and his enthusiasm, passion and drive have taken the band to unprecedented new highs. Furthermore, his full time job as a Peripatetic Music Teacher means he is an expert in all things brass – the perfect all-rounder for our future generation of players!
